Design Overview
ProPoint was designed to be a beginner-friendly sculpting tool for all ages. With different points for all stages of the sculpting process, by combining two tools into one ProPoint helps users efficiently execute their ideas.

The thin form made up of a hard plastic handle and a soft rubber cap makes cleaning quick and easy, storage simple, and prevents strain over long periods of time.
Market Research
The art supply and sculpting tool market is dominated by specialty manufacturers with little focus on beginner accessibility. Most needle and scoring tools are designed for professional ceramicists — leaving hobbyists, students, and first-time sculptors without a tool that fits their grip, workflow, or budget.
Pencil-grip tools with uniform cylindrical shafts cause finger cramping during extended sessions. No current entry-level tool addresses palm or finger support in its form.
Scoring tasks require sustained downward pressure. Without a palm rest or contoured body, fatigue accumulates rapidly in the heel of the hand and the web between thumb and index finger.
Exposed needle points are a consistent hazard — particularly for younger users. No mainstream beginner tool includes a cap, retraction, or protective feature for the working tip.
Hearing from the people who actually sculpt:
Six sculptors ranging from complete beginners to intermediate hobbyists were observed and interviewed during active sculpting sessions. Participants used their own tools in their own workspaces.
"The needle tool is a requirement for the studio, I wouldn't work without it- I just wish I could do more with it."
"When I leave a needle tool in my bag or pencil case it often pokes sthrough the fabric leavingh small holes and poking me when I look for something in my bag."
Tool proliferation is a real problem at the beginner level. New sculptors buy sets and end up with duplicates of tools that serve the same function with slight variation.
Grip comfort degrades quickly. Users compensate by switching hands, taking breaks, or changing posture — all of which interrupt creative flow.
Safety concern is highest for younger users and parents buying tools for children. An exposed point is the single most cited objection to purchasing needle tools.
"I just want something that feels good to hold and does what I need — I don't need ten tools, I need one good one."
- Execute fine details without cramping or fatigue
- Work safely without worrying about the exposed tip
- Simplify their tool kit to what they actually use
- Find a tool that feels designed for them, not a professional
- Hand cramps within 30–40 minutes of detailed work
- Exposed tip catches on storage bags and skin alike
- Tool sets with too many overlapping functions
- No single tool that handles both needle and scoring work
Form Studies
Initial form studies relied heavily on super sculpey and foam. Drilling a 1/4" hole into foam allowed for an existing needle tool to nest in, making iteration easier.

Later foam models were more refined developing specific aspects. Nesting features, coil splitter, and options for interchangeable heads were all developed, using parts of each to build ProPoint's final form.
Sketches
Final sketches iterated on details within the final form and how it might be adapted to benefit the target user. Materials and processes were simplified as well as the tool's capabilities, giving users the most capable hand tool.

Sketch explorations focused on the ergonomic grip profile, dual-tip transition mechanism, and the protective cap geometry. The goal was to arrive at a form that felt intentional and resolved — balancing visual lightness with a secure, fatigue-resistant hold.
Packaging

Paper packaging is used to encase ProPoint while on the shelf. A molded plastic cover is used to protect the tip while allowing users to see what kind of tool they're purchasing.
Built around earth tones complementary to the medium of their intended use — sculpture. Keeping colors recognizable while not overbearing, to blend in with the user's space.
Recycled paper packaging wraps the form leaving a window for users to identify tool point quickly. With little competition in the market ProPoint's branding stands out against the rest, bringing attention to a new way to maximize your sculpting.
